Program Details
True North is a new Pilot Development program that aims to increase the number of BIPOC pilots being recruited at the college level and offers a pathway to becoming a pilot with Horizon Air and Alaska Airlines. Equity, a key pillar of their DEI commitments, includes focusing on making substantial investments in the next generation of aviation leaders through strategic partnerships with universities. They are currently partnered with Delaware State University (DSU) and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES).
The program will provide funding post-instrument through ATP or R-ATP. Horizon Air will provide post instrument funds in the amount of $12,500. In exchange, the commitment for the student is to work two years for Horizon. Alaska Airlines will provide the remainder of the funding for flight fee’s up to $12,500 per year, for up to three years. The commitment to Alaska Airlines will be for three years.

Interested BIPOC students who apply to this posting must meet the following qualifications:
Have successfully completed their private pilot license
Must hold a 1st Class Medical
Be enrolled in the aviation program at either DSU or UMES
Must be in good standing with their University

Entry into the program requires that the student agrees to a release of records allowing Horizon Air and Alaska Airlines full access to the following records:
Training Records
Disciplinary Records
Attendance Records
Any other records the contain necessary and relevant information for the True North program

To be offered a conditional position with Alaska Airlines (when the time arises, in order of Horizon Seniority Number), a Pilot must also satisfy the minimum qualifications for the First Officer at Alaska Airlines position. The pilot does not need to interview at Alaska Airlines, as it is part of the True North program.
